Karen Gosselin can’t quite believe it’s been 10 years since she and her husband, Ben, opened The Spring Street Market & Café in Williamstown. Time flies when you’re feeding an army of college students. Gosselin, who was born in Pittsfield and ran a catering business in Bennington, Vermont, is a self-taught cook who loves nothing more than developing her own recipes, whether they’re homemade soups or innovative baked goods. Just four years after they launched their business, the Gosselins took over the antique store next door and doubled their footprint. “We outgrew it super quick,” Gosselin says. The market now has 18 employees, including a newly hired baker and cook who will help out in the kitchen. That should give Gosselin more time for her other passion—working at the ordering window so that she has direct contact with customers. “I love talking to people and explaining our food,” she says.
When we spoke in May, Gosselin was enjoying a rare lull, but Williams College graduation was just around the corner, to be followed by alumni weekend, and then the onslaught of theater folks from Williamstown Theatre Festival. “And then by the end of August, we’re ready for our kids to come back,” she says. All 2,000-plus of them.
So, what’s Gosselin’s favorite thing to make? “I’d have to say scones,” she says. “I started making them when our kids were little.” In celebration of 10 years in business, she was kind enough to share the following tried and true recipe!
