The Berkshire Co-op in Great Barrington recently launched a new satellite retail store called The Attic, which features sustainable kitchen and home goods. Situated above the Co-op’s Bridge Street store, The Attic opened in April and offers a wide selection of non-plastic and reusable products for the kitchen and home.
“We’re focusing on replacing your typical disposable kitchen items,” says The Attic’s marketing manager, Devorah Sawyer. “So we’ve got reusable containers, beeswax covers, and the kinds of kitchen utensils you’ll buy once and use forever.”
Shoppers will also find tableware, colorful linens, pottery, reusable bags, and wood products, all displayed on tables and cabinetry from Collinsville Antiques in New Hartford, CT. But the store’s most dramatic feature is a stunning wood counter, handcrafted out of a single piece of Brazilian cherry by Scott Brockway of Berkshire Wood Products. “ I call the time I spend on making products like the countertop ‘going to church’ and enjoy the challenges,” says Scott. “It’s some of the hardest and heaviest wood I have ever worked with.”
The Attic carries cutting boards from Berkshire Wood Products (check out our “Setting the Picnic Table” feature on page 22 of our Summer 2023 issue for a glimpse) as well as items from other local artisans: Lorimer Burns Ceramics; Patsy Cowen Ceramics; Qiong Zhou crochet and textiles. Previously, the Co-op featured similar home goods in the store. “We noticed that the category was selling very well—better than we expected,” says Devorah. “We had the opportunity to grow it by giving it its own space.” The Co-op will now use that space to expand its wellness department with more supplements and personal care products.
